Maida Vale private residence extension and renovation
The project is for refurbishing and extension to a Victorian House in North London. Plympton Road reimagines the ground floor. The project includes new side and rear extensions to the existing closet wing, a pocket courtyard, and a terrazzo patio.
The project was design for an artistic creative family by architect Gibson Thorneley and the brief was to achieve a minimalistic space while being very functionable for the every-day life. The new extension creates a contrast between the Victorian look and the modern lines of the new addition.
The materials used for the refurbishment and remodelling combines the warm tones of oak for the joineries with neutral colours of terrazzo. Although it’s only recently found its way into our kitchens and bathrooms (and everywhere else), terrazzo has been around for some 500 years. Originating in Italy, terrazzo is the product of quarry workers using marble chips and leftovers to decorate their own home. But despite its humble beginnings, it soon became a far more high-end product thanks to its popularity in Venice, where it became known as Venetian terrazzo.
Grey terrazzo is used throughout creating a powerful backdrop for the lush planting.
The craftmanship in both joinery made by KUDOS design&build and terrazzo make the detailing effortless, the coordination between these two elements result in a real richness in materiality. In plan form, long views are aligned to create visual layering between internal and external spaces.
